The artist poses the woman so to reveal a glimpse of her chair’s top rail. The design and palette of this element align well with chairs used in Central Kentucky. Crafft is known to have painted in Kentucky and Indiana about the time of these signed and dated portraits yet few examples of his work are found. The best known being The Merchant (35.100.1) which hangs in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center at Colonial Williamsburg. Excellent condition.
