Stenciled Eagle jug made for Bayless McCarthy in Louisville, Kentucky. Circa 1880, made in Southwest Pennsylvania. Retailed in Kentucky.
Condition: five chips to mouth, a tight 7″ crack crosses the bottom which extends slightly less than 9″ up the side forming a “Y” at the top which ends at the base of the handle. Another 2″ horizontal crack bisects below the “Y” separation. Looks as though it might hold water though it slowly weeps at corner of base. A 1 1/2″ long chip to inside at base of handle. Thumps fine. Six as made kiln furniture glaze lifts on shoulder. A glaze abrasion between the “R” and “Y” in the word “Pottery” may be as made. Jug with good color contrast and rich blue, though blurred to viewer’s left in upper quadrant of decoration.
