Train Approaching a Pass
Carl Christian Brenner, 1838-1888
Oil on canvas
26 ¼” x 46 ¼” image size (30 ½” x 50 ½” frame size)
Ref. No. 070320_042
This painting (tacked to its original paneled stretcher) depicts a train approaching a pass along limestone outcrops on a dry winter day. Signed at viewer’s lower right Carl C. Brenner 1887.
Surface condition is very good. The painting has been gently cleaned and varnished with some inpainting at the sky and along the side perimeter frame rubs. During his lifetime Brenner’s paintings were expensive and lavishly framed. The current frame appears to be an over-painted liner from the now-lost original frame. This work, a better Brenner, is in desperate need of a wide gold leaf frame from the 1880s.
