Italian and Sicilian compositions by Faulkner generally have a richer palette perhaps reflecting his disposition during those lit winter holidays. Curiously some of the small Venetian scenes are among his tightest executions. Once had another canal painting dated 1966 which closely relates to this example in crispness relative to much of his expansive oeuvre. Why did he at least twice temper his process at Venice? Possibly a simple carry over from the late 50’s & early 60’s when Henry often trended that direction before loosening his execution after developing his schtick. This example has a notation on the frame’s reverse, “Venice at Night” along with “7-A” . Evidently gallery cataloging not the artist’s notation. A nice frame likely supplied by the gallery, not Henry’s often chosen antique example. The painting in excellent condition with no restoration nor paint loss. The frame is missing 1/2” of a molded detail in one lower corner at the mitre, otherwise it too excellent.
