This carved walnut plaque of a beehive may have originally been intended to house three portraits or some other photographic image.  No appliqués with all carving from a single block.  Alleged once to have had a note attached on the reverse referencing “Dr. Hector Alliet (1862-1919) an archaeologist and former director of the S.W. Museum in California.” Also a loose Mormon reference was quoted.  What ever the origin the work has a rich even dry surface and only minor losses.  Each bee has lost an antenna and there is a slight separation of the two boards used visible at the top.  Circa 1900,  American origin.
